Ethics in OSH Education

Jul 20, 2021

In this webinar recorded, April 15, 2020, Jan K. Wachter, professor in the Safety Sciences Department at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, explains the basics of ethics within the OSH profession. He discusses ethics as a necessary area of study for the OSH professional, and how to educate OSH students and professionals on ethics. He explores the use of varying situational context and student participation for understanding and applying various approaches to professional ethical decision-making. We compares the field of ethics with morality, law and science, and explore the need to educate students on the roles of intent, emotion, personal biases, justification, codes of professional conduct and professional associations on ethical decision-making. He also assesses how to structure an ethics course within the curriculum.

Excellent discussion of ethics and ethical challenges in the OSH profession. ASSP should consider Profellor Wachtel's advise about using case studies to teach ethics to safety professionals who are practitioners.  The ethical challenges in the field are somewhat more complex and challenging than those presented in the webinar and I can say from experience with many safety practitioners that the "right" course of action is often unclear. Other professional societies, e.g., the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), offer ethics case studies in their annual training for recertification. Those cases are discussed and the position of NSPE explained on each.  Such training for ASSP members by ASSP or the BCSP would be of great benefit to our profession and to the employers for whom we work.
