Membership benefits safety professionals across the career continuum. Whether you’re a student, young professional, seasoned manager or corporate leader, the American Society of Safety Professionals has something for you.

Qualifications for Membership

Costs and professional requirements vary among the membership categories we offer.

futureMember

This membership is for those involved in all aspects of the safety industry. Annual dues are $195 for U.S. and Canada,$80 for members outside these countries, plus local chapter fees where applicable.

Professional Member

Professional membership is for individuals with specific designations or education. Annual dues are $195 for U.S. and Canada, $80 for members outside these countries, plus local chapter fees where applicable. To qualify as a professional member within ASSP, you must meet one of the three following criteria:

  1. You must have acquired either the CSP or CIH certification.

  2. Or, you must have a doctorate-level degree in an OSH field and 5 years of OSH experience.

  3. Or, you must have your bachelor’s degree and 5 years of OSH experience, along with one of the following certifications:

  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP)
  • Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS)
  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)
  • Certified Health Physicist (CHP)
  • Certified Human Factors Professional (CHFP)
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
  • Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN)
  • Certified Occupational Health Nurse-Specialist (COHN-S)
  • Certified Professional Environmental Auditor (CPEA)
  • Certified Professional Ergonomist (CPE)

Student Member

Student membership is for individuals pursuing an undergraduate or advanced degree in a safety-related program. Student dues are $15 per year and include access to all of our practice specialty and common interest groups. Student applicants must be enrolled full- or part-time in an undergraduate or advanced safety-related degree program at an accredited college or university. Applications must include faculty advisor verification.

Become a student member

Active Duty U.S. Military Member

We offer reduced dues to members who are active-duty personnel in any branch of the U.S. military whose job involves OSH, as well as to members who are military reservists whose job involves OSH and who are on active duty (beyond the annual two-week commitment). We will request proof of active service.

Emeritus Member

Emeritus membership is available to ASSP members who are retired but want to stay connected. Retiring but want to stay in touch with the occupational safety and health (OSH) community? Retiring from the OSH profession but want to retain your affiliation with ASSP? Reclassify your membership today by sending an e-mail to ASSP's Customer service staff.

For reclassification to Emeritus membership, Emeritus members must:

  1. Have fully retired from gainful employment in the field of safety by reason of age or vocational change, and not currently deriving income from the practice of safety, including consulting in safety or a related field.
  2. Have been a member of the Society for at least ten (10) years, no longer be employed in the field of safety, and shall be a member in good standing at the time of application.
