President's Message

I truly believe that when we are bold, compassionate, humble, curious and connected, we can continuously grow in our careers, help improve this great profession and advance workplace safety.

Throughout our history, ASSP has purposefully worked to maintain the organization’s position of an “honest broker,” meaning that the Society brings valuable guidance and advice to both sides of the aisle without being politically motivated.

When we think about child labor, we often view it as a problem in other countries or believe it is something from the distant past in the U.S. However, recent data reflect a rise in child labor, particularly as some U.S. states relax laws governing young workers.

Throughout my ASSP career, I have interacted with our communities in various ways. These experiences have helped me connect with a wider range of safety professionals, and these interactions have helped shape my thinking and spurred personal and professional growth.

As I start my year as ASSP president, one of the themes I want to carry forward is engagement. I have long been focused on contributing to the greater good, making connections and expanding my impact beyond my daily tasks.

As my year in office comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on the many moments that shaped my journey this year. Each step has reminded me of the incredible honor and responsibility that comes with serving you and our noble profession.

At its core, Total Worker Health is about providing a workplace that aims to prevent injuries and illnesses while also promoting worker well-being. The concept recognizes that factors such as job stress, lifestyle and work-life balance can significantly impact a worker’s safety and health.

Volunteering can enrich your career and life with countless opportunities to make a meaningful impact. I would like to highlight five reasons you should consider becoming more involved and contributing in new ways to ASSP.

OSH is a joint effort that requires collaboration, communication and a sense of duty to one another. Our ASSP community supports your professional and personal growth and advancement throughout your career.

As members of ASSP and the OSH profession, living and leading with our CLEAR values demonstrates our commitment to each other, our work and ourselves.

I believe it is important that we look ourselves in the mirror not only to make sure we like what we see, but also to identify what we want to improve.

We all can be proud to be part of the community dedicated to protecting people, property and the environment. I know I am honored to stand with you as guardians of workplace safety. Together we are pursuing the vision that safety, health and well-being are inherent rights of all workers.
