PARK RIDGE, Illinois (June 18, 2018) — The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) will welcome a new member to its leadership team on July 1. The Board of Directors has appointed Anil Mathur to serve a two-year term on the board as the Society’s public director – a position created in 2015 to gain a corporate perspective from outside the occupational safety and health profession. Mathur is president and CEO of Alaska Tanker Company, a position he has held since 2001.

“Anil’s leadership and business expertise will enrich our organization and help us better understand C-suite expectations,” said ASSP President Jim Smith, M.S., CSP. “His commitment to workplace safety is well known across the industry and will enhance our ability to achieve strategic objectives. We’re excited to have him.”

Mathur’s term as ASSP public director will run through June 30, 2020. He will continue to lead Alaska Tanker Company, which operates oil tankers from Alaska to Washington, California and Hawaii. The company is based in Beaverton, Oregon.

Prior to joining Alaska Tanker Company, Mathur worked for BP for 20 years in management, corporate planning and facilities engineering. He also spent five years at Cities Service Company in engineering and in research and development. Mathur earned an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley, a master’s degree in engineering from the University of Tulsa, and a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, in India. Mathur is an alumnus of Harvard Business School.

“I’m eager to play a role in helping ASSP execute its mission as a global occupational safety and health leader,” said Mathur, who received an ASSP President’s Award in 2012. “I respect ASSP’s leadership approach of collecting a variety of experienced viewpoints.”

Mathur will replace Rand McNally, who was ASSP’s first public director when the position was created three years ago. His term ends June 30.

ASSP’s 10-member Board of Directors is comprised of an elected president, president-elect, senior vice president, vice president of finance and four directors-at-large, as well as an appointed public director and executive director. A board member’s responsibilities include overseeing the Society’s annual budget. The board and its various member community groups help shape the policies and programs that continue to sustain the organization since it was founded in 1911.
