ASSP recently joined a diverse group of non- and not-for-profit associations in the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) Legislative Fly-In in Washington, D.C., to meet with lawmakers and advocate for the Freedom to Invest in Tomorrow’s Workforce Act (H.R. 1151/S. 756). This bipartisan and bicameral legislation would expand 529 college savings plans so they could be used on continuing education opportunities such as professional certifications, licensing and other postsecondary credentials — helping workers at all stages of their careers access the training they need to further their professional development.
By participating in this effort, ASSP aims to expand workforce development opportunities that strengthen industries reliant on skilled professionals, including occupational environmental, health and safety (EHS). The bill would provide tax-advantaged resources for workers pursuing career advancement, mid-career transitions or alternative career pathways — all critical to ensuring a highly trained and adaptable workforce.
The Tomorrow’s Workforce Coalition, which is made up of more than 900 organizations across 50+ industries, has championed this initiative, recognizing its potential to bridge skill gaps and empower professionals in diverse fields. During the fly-in, ASSP engaged directly with key legislative staff members to encourage Illinois legislators to support the bill as it moves through Congress.
Beyond workforce development, ASSP and fellow associations also highlighted the vital role that tax-exempt non-/not-for-profit organizations play in driving economic growth and supporting excellence across a wide range of professions, including EHS. Our goal was to ensure that legislators recognize that associations like ASSP reinvest revenues to support their missions rather than to generate profit.
EHS professionals play a vital role in protecting workers and businesses, and ASSP knows that investing in professional development is key to maintaining high standards in workplace safety and health. ASSP is committed to advocating for policies that enhance career growth and workforce readiness and believes this legislation would better support how people build careers today — not just at age 18, but at every stage of life.
