Luis Pieretti Appointed to NIOSH Board of Scientific Counselors

Sep 08, 2021

MNLuisPierettiLuis Pieretti, a professional member of our West Florida Chapter and a member of our Industrial Hygiene Practice Specialty and Hispanic Safety Professionals Common Interest Group, has been appointed to the NIOSH Board of Scientific Counselors, a federal advisory committee that provides advice and guidance to the director of NIOSH. According to Pieretti, members advise on NIOSH’s ongoing research and injury prevention programs as well as current needs in the OSH field.

Pieretti expresses his enthusiasm about being selected to serve on this board, saying that he is “very happy and honored to be a part of a group of excellent safety professionals with the common goal of enhancing workers’ well-being.”

During his 4-year term, Pieretti hopes to apply his expertise from industries such as workers’ compensation insurance, private and government sectors, academia and his work with multicultural workers to “provide valuable feedback to the director of NIOSH regarding research and injury prevention programs,” he says, especially because NIOSH’s work positively affects not only American workers, but also workers around the world through safety research.

Pieretti holds a doctorate in Industrial Hygiene from the University of South Florida as well as a master’s degree from the University of Puerto Rico. He currently works for the MEMIC Group, a national company based in Portland, ME, that insures more than 20,000 employers. In February, Pieretti helped to create the MEMIC Safety Research Center within the MEMIC Group, with the goals of conducting and publishing safety research and sharing resources to enhance the knowledge of injury prevention.

“I like the idea of helping others, and that is the basis of our profession,” Pieretti says about his work. “We help workers and business owners have safe work environments, which allows everyone to get back to their loved ones in the same way they arrived to work.”
