ASSP’s Flagship Journal Selects Year’s Best Articles, Encourages Submissions

Mar 20, 2025

PARK RIDGE, IL — The flagship journal of the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) has announced its article-of-the-year winners for 2024. Professional Safety honored seven experts from the environmental health and safety (EHS) profession who produced exceptional content for the monthly journal that has been an industry leader for nearly 70 years.

Albert Weaver III, Jessica Kemp, William Ojiambo and Anna Simmons earned first place for their article “ From Hard Hats to Helmets: The History and Future of Head Protection” that was published in August.

Second place was awarded to Matthew R. Hallowell and Carren Spencer for contributing “ Safety Classification and Learning Model: Defining and Classifying Potential Serious Injuries and Fatalities.” Their article was published in the February 2024 edition.

Fred Straub captured third place for his article “ Risk Appetites at Polar Opposites: The Unacceptable Risk” that was published in November.

“Selecting the year’s best articles is always a challenging task given the number of outstanding contributions we receive,” said Krista Hyde, Ph.D., CSP, CHMM, chair of the Editorial Review Board. “Our talented authors possess the knowledge and experience it takes to share industry best practices that are influential in advancing workplace safety and health.”

Professional Safety offers trusted research, practical guidance and evidence-based solutions to help EHS professionals identify hazards, protect workers and educate management that investing in safety is a sound business strategy. The award-winning journal, first published in 1956, is read by more than 35,000 safety professionals around the world who receive it as an ASSP member benefit.

ASSP’s Editorial Review Board encourages technical submissions to Professional Safety, which publishes peer-reviewed articles and a wealth of other useful safety and health information and advice to help reduce injuries, illnesses and fatalities on the job. Details on the submission process are available on the ASSP website.

“Getting an article published in the journal is a great way to help advance your career,” Hyde said. “It can separate an individual in a competitive field by showcasing their depth of expertise to a vast global audience.”
