The University of Florida Gator Student Safety Club was once a thriving ASSP student section that became inactive in 2014. The group has been meeting monthly and hopes to come back officially as an ASSP student section this year.
The club held its March monthly meeting at the M.E. Rinker School of Construction Management/Flour Program for Construction Safety. Fifty students from the university's construction and agriculture degree programs were on hand to learn about safety in the theme park industry from Heather Earl (Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Safety Manager, University of Florida alum and Central Florida Chapter board member).
Faculty Advisor Dr. Andrew Wehle, STSC, connected with Earl when she reached out to the university to share a construction safety intern position. Wehle invite her to speak and she was happy to spend some time getting back to her roots and connecting with this group of emerging safety professionals.
“It was really amazing and we received great feedback from the students,” says Club President Alireza Adibfar, adding that the club is looking forward to a continued partnership with Earl and they are already discussing a technical tour.
