The ASSP Foundation’s NextGen Board named Tyler Vanchure, a senior majoring in safety management at Slippery Rock University, the 2019 recipient of the Student in Leadership Award in Innovation.
Her award includes a full conference experience at Safety 2019 in New Orleans, LA, where she will find numerous learning experiences and network with ASSP board members, leaders and potential employers.
“Being a senior, I want to make big waves and encourage others to be part of ASSP and the Foundation,” she says.
More than 35 students who applied to attend our Future Safety Leaders Conference in November answered this question for a chance to receive the award: “Tell us your personal contributions over the last 12 months to strengthen your ASSP student section, chapter or the safety culture in your community. How were your individual efforts innovative and unique?”
Tyler was recognized for her work restructuring the student section to be more inclusive and starting the first Women in Safety Excellence group at the university.
“I’ve always had a knack for helping people,” she say. “That desire grew after experiencing Hurricane Katrina in 2005. I found a perfect fit at Slippery Rock.”
