The first Veteran Stand Down occurred in 1998 in San Diego, CA. This event brings together homeless vets in a single location to access community resources and supplies needed to begin addressing their individual problems and rebuilding their lives. It is estimated that this program reaches more 52,000 veterans each year.
The Jesse Brown VA Medical Center is the sponsor of the annual Chicago Winter Stand Down, which focuses on winter clothing and housing resources. This event helps 700 to 800 veterans within the Chicagoland area. This year, a representative from the center will attend the conference reception to accept the completed packages.
