Danny Callies is corporate safety director at G&R Mineral Services Inc. He is also Vice President of ASSP’s Alabama Chapter and a member of the Construction Practice Specialty. He’s the grand prize winner of ASSP’s 2017 Member-Get-A-Member campaign. His name was drawn from more than 1,300 entries received by the program this year.

ASSP: You’ve been a member of ASSP since 2012. Why did you initially join?

Danny: I’ve been active in safety for over 40 years and was invited to attend an Alabama Chapter meeting where I discovered many of my safety professional friends in attendance. I felt welcomed and was invited to become a member of ASSP.

ASSP: What are the biggest benefits you receive as a member?

Danny: Networking, passing along some 40 plus years of my experiences, and having others share safety ideas and tips. Watching the Alabama Chapter student sections grow at University of Alabama at Birmingham, Auburn University, and Jacksonville State University. They are the future of the safety industry. I have had the privilege to receive awards such as the Alabama Chapter Safety Professional of the Year in Construction (2013) and the Region IV Safety Professional of the Year (2017).

ASSP: Why do you encourage your colleagues to join?

Danny: Fellowship with other safety professionals and to advance our own career and develop a stronger safety culture in Alabama and throughout the country.

ASSP: What would you tell other members about the Member-Get-A-Member program?
