ASSP Representatives Encourage OSH Students

May 21, 2018

Encouraging OSH students today helps to support the profession and by inspiring future safety professionals. ASSP representatives Director-At-Large Brad Giles, P.E., CSP, and Society President Jim Smith, M.S., CSP, recently visited college campuses to share their knowledge about safety and address OSH students.

Giles visited Murray State University and presented a session to the ASSP student section. His message highlighted the importance of seeing oneself as a leader in the workplace. “Students do not necessarily think of themselves as leaders,” Giles said.

He also visited Slippery Rock University and Indiana University of Pennsylvania at the end of April to speak to OSH students and student sections about leadership and their role in the OSH field.

Jim Smith visited his alma mater, University of Central Missouri, and presented to more than 75 college students about the safety profession and its importance in the workplace. He discussed the future outlook of the safety and health profession, highlighting the importance of ASSP, personal growth and the versatility of the OSH degree.

“It is a degree in a career with lifelong learning and allows you to work in any industry segment that you choose,” Smith said. “A noble profession where your body of work protect people from getting injured and allows mothers, dads, brothers and sisters to go home safe each day.”
