The Role of Governance

About ASSP

Our governance helps us set strategy, deliver value, address risk and secure the future of our Society while advancing the OSH profession.

2022 House of Delegates: Voting Results

The House of Delegates recently approved two new business items:

  • Motion 1: Grant real estate transaction authority to the Board of Directors to sell ASSP’s headquarters building in Park Ridge, IL.
  • Motion 2: Approve revised bylaws enacting the governance changes approved by the Board of Directors.

Survey and Ballot Systems, an independent third-party partner that supported the voting process and distributed ballots to all delegates on record, verified the results.

Next Steps

Based on the approval of the real estate motion, the Board of Directors and staff are now working to complete the sale of the Park Ridge, IL, property.

In addition, with the governance motion approved, we are in the process of updating the bylaws on the website and beginning the process of implementing the advisory group and its operations. To prepare for the 2022-23 program year, we will begin actively recruiting at-large members of the advisory group soon.

Governance Proposal Background

The governance proposal was introduced to members in mid-2021. We then conducted a series of listening sessions and solicited member questions. This feedback informed several changes to the proposal. Additional changes and details were incorporated into the final proposal based on the results of a survey to delegates and chapter presidents to validate feedback received. These changes are reflected in the final voting packages linked above.

We have posted additional background information and FAQs on our governance proposal background webpage.

Repositioning ASSP for Success

In January 2021, we formed a Governance Task Force to guide the development of the recommended strategy and action plan to modernize the Society’s governance, systems and structures so ASSP can make business decisions more swiftly and deliver member value more efficiently. Their work was informed by research and insights from member and staff experience and external expertise.

The members of the task force were Lindsay Bell, Wyatt Bradbury, Abby Ferri, Lori Frederic, Matt Herron, Monique Parker, Jose Perez, Rick Pollock, Kathy Seabrook and Royal Willard. These members represent our diverse member community in many ways. Brad Giles, 2020-21 President-Elect, and Christine Sullivan, 2020-21 Senior Vice President, co-chaired the task force. Deb Roy, 2020-21 President, and CEO Jennifer McNelly were ex-officio members.
